Allergy sufferers can find great relief with some well-thought-out bedroom upgrades using natural materials. We know that allergy seasons are becoming longer and more intense. In Minnesota, that means spring allergy season and late summer allergy season leave very little time for a respite. The materials in your bedroom can ease the discomfort in several ways.
Our cold winters help delay outdoor allergy season until March or April. Peak allergy months in Minnesota are: May, June, and September. We normally see the outdoor allergy season wrapping up in October, just in time for sufferers to struggle with indoor allergy season through the winter.
Wool is hypoallergenic and mold and mildew-resistant! While we can’t stop the outdoor allergens from haunting you, we can keep the indoor allergens at bay. Dust mites, mold, and mildew are all major causes of indoor allergies and asthma. Likely, the most common of these are dust mites. They thrive on dead skin cells and humidity, then leave their own skin and waste products behind – yuck! These proteins trigger allergy symptoms in susceptible folks. Wool bedding wicks moisture and creates an inhospitable environment for dust mites. Even the texture and structure of wool reduces the likelihood that they’ll thrive. Wool’s moisture-wicking ability, breathability, and structure are all the same properties that keep molds and mildews from thriving, as well.
Other things to consider when trying to reduce the impact of indoor allergens would be using a HEPA air filter device, using a vacuum with a HEPA filter, boosting your immune system, and reducing the synthetic materials in your home. Besides the synthetic materials in your mattress and bedding, carpet can host dust mites, molds, and mildews. Replacing carpet with other flooring and natural fiber rugs could go a long way in minimizing allergens. Also, keep in mind that there are invisible irritants that can add up to contribute to your allergy symptoms. Some examples of invisible irritants are: artificial fragrances, chemical treatments, flame retardants, and harsh dyes.
Thankfully, Cuddle Ewe’s products are made from wool and cotton and are all natural and non-toxic, besides being made right here in the US! We also recommend our line of American Blossom sheets, another US-made company with a shared ethos.
