Fibromyalgia (commonly misspelled as fibermyalgia or fibromylagia) is a painful disorder that affects over 3 million people in the US alone. Indeed, obtaining help for fibromyalgia pain, coupled with relief from chronic fatigue typically become the driving forces in the lives of those affected. Complicating the issue are the many overlaps with other illnesses; fibromyalgia with ra (rheumatoid arthritis), with chronic fatigue, or with Gulf War Syndrome is not uncommon.

Physicians have yet to achieve a clear consensus on what exactly causes fibromyalgia. Some attempt to treat the symptoms, recent studies indicate a brain chemical imbalance may be the cause, while some even claim there is no disease at all, all of which makes it extremely difficult to determine what, if any, fibromyalgia triggers might exist. Regardless of the medical community's confusion, fibromyalgia sufferers are quite aware that a problem does indeed exist, and that it's quite painful.

Due to the levels of pain involved, restful sleep is often challenging. Finding supportive bedding that distributes weight can be a critical element in reducing neural pain signals to the brain. Using a natural fiber that breathes such as wool can be very helpful by reducing discomfort and fibromyalgia back itch in particular. Here are some of our products that may be of particular help:

Mary J Shomon, author of

Living Well With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, says in her book, "For optimal comfort, however, patients frequently prefer a wool mattress underquilt or topper. One in particular that is very popular with CFS and fibromyalgia patients is the Cuddle Ewe underquilt, which is filled with layers of thick, natural wool batting."

Signs & Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

There are many symptoms for fibromyalgia, many of which can overlap with other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. Here are a few of the most common:

  • Widespread pain
  • Inability to sleep well
  • Fatigue
  • Stiffness
  • Dizziness
  • Itching & skin problem
  • Weight Gain
  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Memory Loss
  • Depression
  • Temperomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ, TMJD)

Fibromyalgia Treatment Options

Nondrug treatments can be very helpful. Meditation to help reduce stress, general stress reduction, improvement of sleep quality, keeping warm, gentle massage, and application of heat are all therapies in common use. As far as exercises to help fibromyalgia, aerobics are commonly used to help keep the body healthy and limber.

Recent studies on brain receptors indicate that part of the problem may be a 'fibromyalgia brain chemical' imbalance and may be addressed with new products such as Lyrica. Side effects of this medication such as weight gain and edema can complicate matters, but in 12-week trials 30 percent of patients reported that their pain had fallen by at least half. If you have fibromyalgia and fainting has been a problem, Lyrica could actually make the situation worse. Always discuss this and any other medications with your physician.

Short List - new medications of note*:
*This list omits many additional medications - consult your physician for more information.

  • Lyrica - inhibitory neurotransmitter - studies indicate average pain reduction of approximately 2 points on a 10-point scale. Side effects include weight gain, edema, swelling, dizziness, somnolence (sleepiness).
  • Cymbalta - dual-reuptake inhibitor - efficiency similar to Lyrica for women, but shows no effect on men. Side effects include nausea, dizziness, somnolence, fatigue.
  • Xyrem - central nervous system depressant - thought to help patients achieve deeper sleep - Schedule III federally controlled substance - Side effects include headache, nausea, dizziness, nasopharyngitis, somnolence, vomiting, and urinary incontinence. Note: 2 deaths occurred during trials for Xyrem.

Regardless of whether you choose to pursue exercise, medications, or some other treatment option, a key element is being able to sleep. Sleep allows the body to recuperate, helps stabilize chemical imbalance, and strengthens the immune system. Wool products from Cuddle EweTM can help achieve these goals and stabilize your body temperature to avoid extremes of cold and heat. In addition, our natural ingredients help avoid flare-ups in those with product sensitivities.
